92 techniques covered — from foundational throws to advanced ground techniques.
Judo techniques are divided into two main families: nage-waza (throwing techniques) and katame-waza (grappling techniques). Nage-waza comprises 62 throws, organized into five subcategories — te-waza (hand throws), koshi-waza (hip throws), ashi-waza (foot and leg throws), ma-sutemi-waza (rear sacrifice throws), and yoko-sutemi-waza (side sacrifice throws). Katame-waza covers 30 ground techniques across osaekomi-waza (hold-downs), shime-waza (chokes), and kansetsu-waza (joint locks).
For beginners, judo instruction typically starts with a small set of foundational throws — seoi-nage, o-goshi, and o-soto-gari are among the first taught in most clubs worldwide — alongside basic hold-downs such as kesa-gatame. These techniques introduce the core principles of kuzushi (off-balancing), tsukuri (positioning), and kake (execution) that apply to every technique in judo.
